Paintings, Facebook, and sewing projects

Richard Jarvis next to velvet Grandma
After the Halloween decorations came down we were left with a nice big blank wall over the kitchen table. I let the Boy test out several pieces–he said he wanted to try art that isn’t ours, for a change–and he came up with this arrangement.

The flapper is by Richard Jarvis, an Art Deco-style painter who used to live in Boise and now lives in Arizona, I believe. I met him years ago and gushed all over him about how much I loved his art and it was a little embarrassing (for me). The black painting is a velvet painting of my grandmother, and it has not aged well–you can barely see her. Still, the feeling is there. Who doesn’t like velvet paintings? Kitsch-o-rama!

Josh and his art
Speaking of art, here’s the Boy in front of several of his paintings. He wanted me to take pictures of him, using both my (broken) camera and his new fancy schmancy iphone 5, for F@cebook, which he inexplicably joined recently after mocking it for YEARS. He also joined Instagram, although I think he’s only posted one picture, which is cute.

He claims he joined F@cebook to be more social. Good luck, I said. Meanwhile he’s reading everyone’s updates so I don’t have to–F@cebook has always given me mild anxiety. I told him to only let me know the “important” updates. “I’m so bored” or “I made garlic chicken tonight for dinner–WOWIE!!!” doesn’t count.

the B and a bee
“Don’t trust the B—- in Apartment 23” is cute. Krysten Ritter definitely gives me shades of Karen, with her fashionable black/red/leopard ensembles and martinis. Speaking of Karen, when you come for a visit, Kissy, we may have to break out the “Will and Grace”! It’s been a year since I obsessively watched it and I miss it!

rainbow peace sign batik
Recent fabric purchases for pillowcase presents: lime green turtle batik and this wonderful rainbow peace sign batik that I may have to buy more of to make pillowcases for us, too.

Neon rainbow glitter butterfly fabric? Yes please! For the girls.

stitching up some green turtle batik
The sewing machine was busy last week.

purple peace sign batik pillowcase with rainbow batik edging
There was only a remnant of this wonderful purple peace sign batik left, so I added edging made from the leftover fabric from the back of Lisa and Zane’s wedding quilt that I made them in 2008 (three years after they got married, but hey, who’s counting?). She’s going to LOVE IT. I hope she’s not reading this. I always assume that no one reads my blog, and then I never have to get nervous about anything. Guilt Free Blogging: since 2003!*

little stars dress
Here’s a little stars dress I bought from Delia’s clearance a while back. Unfortunately it needs a little stitching before it can be wearable–I took the hem out and am making it a little longer. Why are dresses so damn short? Honestly I LUST over Modcloth’s dress selection until I read that everything is 32 inches long, then I just congratulate myself on saving money. Obsessing is free.

Happy Monday! The Broad and I have plans, which I’m hoping will work out. It’s raining like crazy out there–might be a good day to return to Pacific Fabrics for some floral rickrack. Oh yeah.

* ha ha I WISH.
