Maui Part 10: surf city, here we come

Welcome back to Day 4. After the Boy and I returned from our morning exploration of Slaughterhouse Beach, we went to Black Rock to do some snorkeling.

Then we went to the Hula Grill for lunch and had some of the best fish tacos I’d ever had.

The Hula Grill was right on the beach, and even boasted a “barefoot bar”.

It had a great view.

On the way back to the hotel, we passed…
the comfort zone
THE COMFORT ZONE!!!

If you’re an obsessive “Strangers with Candy” fan like me, you’ll recall that in the very first episode, Jerri says that she got the hideous pleated pants she happens to be wearing at “The Comfort Zone”. Every single time we passed the store, I would say, “The Comfort Zone!” in my Jerri Blank voice, all week long. Ahhh, good times!

The Boy was ready to surf again after lunch, so we packed up the board and my camera and took off to a different surf spot, just the two of us.

stepping out

While the Boy surfed I was essentially alone on my very own stretch of grass, save for one elderly man on a cell phone sunbathing a couple of palm trees away.

You can see the little “pool” formed by the rocks–there were a few children playing in it.

starting out

It was fun watching him progress over the course of the week–it was only his second time surfing, ever, but he did get better and better.

paddling

I remember being concerned when I went surfing (I only went surfing once that week) that the ankle tie would whip the surfboard around and slam it into my skull…but that never happened.

Do you think they had a little surfing conversation?

surfers heading out
More surfers head out. Surfers’ bodies tend to be stocky and muscular, with big arms and shoulders, my favorite. Eye candy, all week long.

more paddle surfers
I wonder if it’s any easier surfing with the paddle? For me it would just be one more thing to have to manage, and the surfboard was difficult enough with my pathetic upper-body “strength”.

I sure do have a thing for Afros.

the zoom function is really nice
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: I really like the zoom function on my new camera. Look at that detail!

surfer dude with black trunks
This dude and his girlfriend rolled up to the beach soon before we left. They both had stringy bodies, black swimsuits, and the most insanely over-the-top deep mahogany tans I had ever seen…on white people. They started rubbing oil all over each other and it was all I could do not to take pictures of their freakishly tan bodies…but they were a little too close to me and would have noticed, and possibly beat me up in an aggressive, greasy way. Heigh ho.

Meanwhile, in not-so-tan world, there I am again.

…HELLO!

See that surfboard on the right? That belonged to the really-really tan girl, who is just out of shot. I’m looking at her, and there is most definitely a grin on my face.

I could live in Maui for the next 10 years of my life (yes please), hang out on the beach every day, and never tan like that. Skin cancer? You betcha. That’s why just one year in Maui would be fine.

“What’s one year? That’s nothing!” I’ve told the Boy 6 or 7 times since we’ve been back. “I’ll get pregnant, we’ll move back…”

Surely we can find jobs in Maui. We’re young, hard-working adults! Well, one of us is, anyway!

  1. thank you! Editing them is a huge job. I thought about just making a link to them instead of showing them all, then thought nah, what else am I doing? Hanging out with dogs and watching Netflix? the Maui pictures are WAY more interesting.

p.s. COOL! when are you going??? oh man your photos will be so good!

  2. Beautiful shots. I’ve been to Maui and would love to live there.

I was wondering if you could tell me how to get your thumbnail photo on comments like you have yours set up for commenting on raymis blog???

  3. Yes the Maui pics are awesome! We’re hitting Virginia at the end of August, I’ve never been to any sort of surf competition, I’m hoping there’s lots of action to capture!
