RAW show: Part 2: let’s look at some paintings

After my failed interview video and subsequent snarfing of 1/2 a Xanax in the parking lot, we were ready to return to the show. A former co-worker of mine and her girlfriend showed up to show support, which was sweet of them.

Susan Ciaccio 1
Susan Ciaccio’s glitter mermaid tail caught my eye from across the building and reeled me in.

Susan Ciaccio and her work
She was very sweet, and I loved her paintings. Her company is “Rubia De Los Muertos“, which means “Blonde of the Dead”. Love it. I love Day of the Dead art.

Susan Ciaccio 2
Her portrait of her husband. I’m crazy about that frame.

Flapper with a cloche hat! Oval canvas! It’s nice to see someone else using oval canvas.

look sharp
The Boy looking sharp.

Tray London table
Nice set-up.

Tray London art
Tray London’s delicate art.

the model swarm begins
The problem begins.

The green room for the fashion designer was to the right of my painting section, just like the July show. Unlike the July show, however, the models took up the whole section and did not budge for the entire length of the show (the fashion show is at the end of the night, of course). Who wants to navigate through a swarm of irritated models in latex to look at art? NOBODY, that’s who. I couldn’t even get to my art until the end of the night. Major disappointment.

ser-i-ous
Grrrr.

artist near art
This was about as close as I could get. To my own art. Sigh.

artist and art
Sparkle, Neely! I received a lot of compliments on the blue dress. Women really seem to respond positively to dresses with pockets. Nice, deep pockets, not those tiny fake ones.

Nick Beery wall
I was pretty well enamored of Nick Beery‘s art, and made sure to introduce myself. He couldn’t have been nicer.

I “networked” a great deal more at this show, introducing myself to most of the artists and complimenting their work. I really liked the artists and art at this particular show. Except for maybe the fashion designer, who snarled at me like I was some sort of peasant when I had to walk through the green room on my way back from the stage. Sheesh.

Chani Murat 2
Chani Murat’s art inspired me 100% to experiment with epoxy as a painting sealer. The finish on her paintings, which were acrylic paint on wood, was incredible. I couldn’t take my eyes off that glitter heart. No glitter shedding at all! Completely sealed! A lightbulb went off.

Chani Murat 1
Grapes!

Chani Murat 3
She’s a tattoo artist. I really liked her work. I’ve been thinking for a while I should paint on wood more often, like I did for this Kate Moss painting, and seeing Chanti’s work cemented it.

Around 9 I got up on stage with the first group of artists for introductions. Although I blew the interview video, I had no problem getting up on stage.

my body language says it all
The girl in the red bandage dress was really tall. My body language in this shot is hilarious.

onstage
I blathered briefly about ongoing obsessions.

throwing in the website mention
I even threw in, at the end, a mention for this website. That was the first time I’d ever promoted my website, in public, to strangers. Talking about my blog is usually the last thing I ever mention. However…I think it’s gotten a little less embarrassing over the years. Maybe?

Stay tuned for Part 3…Corinne and I walk around, looking glamorous! I meet people from “meetup”! We eat delicious cookies! Yes!

  1. it’s funny, as someone who spent way too many years into that sort of gothy, latex /rubber black and bondage style scene, I now notice that it just really doesn’t progress or change in any way. I look back now and it’s all so very ….boring really. Maybe I’m just jaded, I don’t know.

How annoying to have them all draped about your set-up though. They really needed to have a separate area for them didn’t they.

  2. I second the fabu tan – you looked like a statuesque vintage Barbie doll. Swoon.

That frame is from Ikea – (it’s called UNG DRILL) $30, it’s plastic, but they are just fabulous. I have 2 of them, and the last time I bought one, the Ikea checker told me to keep and eye on the clearance area (it’s in the corner near the checkstands) because a girl had come through with THREE of them for $6 each – They were returns out-of-package, so they have to mark them way down. Of course I never get that lucky… They also have some cool new smaller white frames called KVILL that are $5 & are kinda enjoyable… I’m not Ikea-obsessed, I just like little bits and pieces… 🙂

  3. thanks V. yeah, the artist pointed out she got it at ikea too! I still haven’t ever been to an ikea, and I’m okay with that.

the dream is to learn woodcarving to make my own frames. THE DREAM. or um, make my husband do it.
