Kauai, Day 4: Part 2: the gorgeous Na Pali Coast

Liz making a shaka
Aloha! Yes, it has been a whole month since our Kauai vacation and I’m still blogging day 4. Can’t rush the process, mang. Here’s Little Edie giving a double shaka on the Blue Dolphin Charter to the Na Pali Coast.

Na Pali 6
Around the time that the Na Pali Coast started to come into view, the water became very turbulent. I had to remain planted in my seat during the really gorgeous part of the boat ride.

Na Pali 1
At one point, my tiny bladder could wait no longer and I had to make my very unsteady way off the top deck down below to the bathroom. Word of advice, to those even remotely prone to seasickness: IT CAN WAIT. I went from 0% seasickness to about 75% in a matter of seconds. I’m amazed I didn’t throw up (I hate throwing up–haven’t done it in years).

Na Pali 7
After that ill-timed journey downstairs, I felt mildly seasick for the rest of the boat ride, and I was SO MAD about it! I had been bragging to Josh about how great I felt…no need to wear my Sea Bands, no need for those ginger chews I bought specifically for the ride (side note: they were disgusting–don’t get the peppermint flavor!).

Na Pali 8
Dutifully I pulled on my Sea Bands, chewed a ginger chew (gagged it down would maybe be more appropriate), and dealt with it. Thank God I had the Na Pali coast to gawk over while I felt sick.

Meanwhile, my maniac of a husband was running around full tilt boogie on the deck while his sick wife and various old people remained seated. He was right up front, snapping 10,000 photos.

Na Pali 2
He had an excellent view. I had to trim out some heads and boat parts in my photos…you can still see a bit of head here. Heigh ho!

Na Pali 3

caves and waterfalls
The color of the water was incredible.

teal waters
Waterfalls and caves everywhere. I kept thinking of the Goonies movie, for some reason.

A waterfall inside a cave? Oh Kauai.

misty green cliffs
Around this point of the trip, there was an audible gasp that went up on the boat. It was staggeringly beautiful. I felt all of the hairs on my arms stand up, and I really, really missed my mother at that moment. She’s been telling me all my life about how much she wants to go to Kauai, and right then, I wanted her there with me. I got a little choked up.

jagged green cliff tops
It doesn’t even look real, does it? It didn’t in real life, either. The brain has a hard time processing.

Na Pali 9
Gorgeous.

the money shot
I refer to this one as “the money shot”. This looks like it should be on the cover of a “Visit Kauai!” travel brochure.

Na Pali 5
My camera was with Josh, and I couldn’t move from my seat, so he completely took over photography duties while the waves were wild and woolly. I was forced to just observe with my eyes (for once), and not be distracted by the camera, and you know what? It was kind of refreshing.

Na Pali 4
75% of the photos that I took from my viewpoint had parts of the boat or this couple’s heads in them, so I had to do a lot of cropping. This dude and his girlfriend stayed in exactly the same spot during the entire boat trip. She was wearing a tiny chiffon romper and I’m sure it seemed like a good idea back at Port Allen but it was a very poor choice for this boat ride. She looked miserable. The dude had some beautiful tattoos that I wish I had gotten a better photo of, rather than the back of his head. Heigh ho!

There’s one more part to this boat ride series…the sunset! Because you KNOW Josh took 50 photos of just the sun setting. And you thought I was obsessive, ha!
